Hướng dẫn sử dụng dấu phẩy để liên kết với mệnh đề và cụm từ trong tiếng anh

Để có thể nằm được những sự liên quan giữa dấu phẩy và thành phần câu thì các bạn phải nắm được câu đúng và câu sai. Để có thể dùng chính xác dấu phẩy để liên kết vơi mệnh đề và cụn từ trong tiếng Anh.

Các bạn hãy xem đoạn văn sau và thêm dấu phẩy vào chỗ cần thiết. Sau đó các bạn hãy kiểm tra lại đáp án ở câu dưới

Dấu phẩy đứng trước từ, cụm từ và mệnh đề dùng để giới thiệu.

Dấu phẩy được sử dụng để làm nổi bật từ, cụm từ, mệnh đề để dùng giới thiêu so với những thành phần khác của câu. Dấu phẩy giúp cho người đọc không bị lẫn phần giới thiệu và phần chính của bài.

Nói cách khác dấu phẩy đứng trước phần giới thiệu sẽ tiết kiệm thời gian của nguòi đọc và giảm thiểu nguy cơ hiểu sai nghĩa câu

Mình sẽ cho các bạn một số ví dụ về sự liên kết của dấu phẩy, từ, cụm từ và mệnh đề trong câu

Từ

• Disappointed, we left the movie before it ended.
• Annoyed, the manager stomped back into the storeroom.
• Amazed, Captain Holland dismissed the rest of the troops.

Cụm từ

• Expecting the worst, we liquidated most of our inventory.
• Badly injured in the accident, the president was gone for two months.

Mệnh đề

• If we plan carefully for the grand opening, we can increase sales.
• While we were eating lunch, an important fax came.
• Because we left before the meeting ended, we were not eligible to win a door prize.

Mệnh đề phụ thuộc của phần đầu câu đều đứng sau dấu phẩy. Hai phần của câu đều có thể dễ dàng đảo ngược vị trí và câu vẫn có nghĩa

Tuy nhiên, nếu bạn đảo ngược vị trí, đưa mệnh đề độc lập lên đầu cầu thì sẽ không cần dùng dấu phẩy

Ví dụ

Dấu phẩy còn giúp người đọc nhận biết được những từ đi cùng nhau.

Ví dụ:

• Alone at night, time seems endless.
• As he watched the game slowly came to an end.

Dẩu phẩy và bổ ngữ

Bổ ngữ là một từ hoặc nhóm từ sau danh từ, đại từ. Bổ ngữ giúp cho danh từ hoặc đại từ được xác định rõ hơn bằng cách giải thích hoặc nhận dạng nó.

Ví dụ

• Rachel Stein won the first prize, an expense-paid vacation to the Bahamas.
• New Orleans, home of the Saints, is one of my favorite cities.
• One of the most inspiring motivators in college basketball is Dr. Tom Davis, coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Tên riêng cũng được dùng sau danh từ hoặc đại từ để nhận diện, làm rọ thêm. Đây là những dạng bổ ngữ chúng ta không cần thêm dấu phẩy.

Ví dụ

• My sister Deb lives four hours away.
• The noted novelist Barbara Kingsolver writes about the South and Southwest.
• The president Manuel Diaz will visit this site tomorrow.

Một số ví dụ về việc đặt dấu phẩy

• Megabyte, a word virtually unheard of a decade ago, is very common today.
• Mrs. McCord, the investment specialist, left a message for you this afternoon.
• Jane likes to spend Saturday mornings at the local farmer's market, a feast for the senses.
• Water purity, a major concern for campers, has steadily worsened over the years.
• High heels were invented by Louis XIV, a very short French king.
• My aunt Marsha will visit later this month.

Dấu phẩy và những mệnh đề không hạn chế

Mệnh đề phụ thuộc khi đứng đầu câu thì sẽ được theo sau bởi dấu phẩy nhưng nếu mệnh đề phụ thuộc khi đứng ở những vị trí khác trong câu thì không cần phải có dấu phẩy đi kèm. Điều đó chỉ đúng nếu đó là mệnh đề cốt yếu.

Nếu bỏ những mệnh đề có thể sẽ làm thay đổi nghĩa của câu thậm chí làm nó trở thành câu sai. Những mệnh đề đó được gọi là mệnh đề cốt yếu hoặc mệnh đề hạn chế.

Ví dụ

• All drivers who have had a drunk driving conviction should have their licenses revoked.
• All drivers should have their licenses revoked.

Phần bôi đậm là mệnh đề cốt yếu vì nghãi của câu sẽ thay đổi nghiêm trọng nếu cắt bỏ mệnh đề đó.

Mệnh đề hạn chế thì không cần đi kèm dấu phẩy.

Mệnh đề không thiết yếu hoặc mệnh đề không hạn chế thì phải đi kèm dấu phẩy

Mệnh đề không hạn chế chỉ đơn giản là thêm thông tin và không thực sự thiết yếu với nghĩa cơ bản của câu. Nếu mệnh đề không hạn chế bị cắt bỏ nghĩa cơ bản của câu hay không bị thay đổi.

Ví dụ

• My father, who is still farming, is 74 years old.
• My father is 74 years old.

Phần bôi đậm là mệnh đề không hạn chế. Mệnh đề không hạn chế thường bắt đầu bởi liên từ phụ thuộc như: who, whom, whose, which, or that.

Các câu dưới đây chứa mệnh đề phụ thuộc, mình sẽ in đậm để các bạn dễ nhận biết.
